The US firm has nearly 800 branches in the UK and Ireland – including Carlisle, Barrow and Kendal in Cumbria – but it is expanding aggressively and plans to have 1,200 by 2021.

It has previously named Workington and Penrith among 50 locations where it hopes to open and has now added Whitehaven. The list is being circulated to chartered surveyors and property consultants.

The company says the ideal site is a highly-visible location, either on-street or in a shopping centre, close to family neighbourhoods, with 1,100sq ft of floor space, at least 15ft of frontage and parking.

It should have planning consent for A5 hot-food takeaway use or at least the potential for change of use.

The company argues that its stores have little impact on nearby residents, which should make it easier to get planning consent.

It does not use fryers and around three quarters of pizzas are delivered so reducing litter, anti-social behaviour and traffic problems.

It says: “In a Keep Britain Tidy survey in 2009, carried out in 10 UK cities, not one piece of Domino’s-branded litter was found.”

Domino’s was founded in 1960. Its first UK outlet, in Luton, opened in 1985.
