Permanent speed cameras installed in north Cumbria village

It has taken three years of campaigning but residents in a village near Carlisle are celebrating after finally getting speed cameras installed.
Former mayor and city councillor Bill Graham has fought to get cameras installed at Corby Hill in the hope it will cut speeding.
He says motorists speeding through the village is a big problem.
As well as lobbying for cameras he is also hoping to get motorway traffic diverted so it does not have to travel through the village.
Mr Graham said: “I have been trying to get speed cameras installed in Corby Hill for the safety of my constituents. There seems to be a problem with through traffic using the A69 and speeding when passing through the village.
“I would like to thank Roadlink, the police and Cumbria County Council and I hope that these cameras will help to alleviate the problem of speeding through Corby Hill.”
Different methods of reducing speeding in the village have been used before, including a volunteer-led ‘Speedwatch’ project. Participants were trained to use speed guns and those they caught speeding were sent warning letters.
Mr Graham believes that the cameras are having an effect, but that the problem of traffic still exists.
He said: “People are slowing down already and I think it will make it safer – I wouldn’t have pushed for it if I didn’t.
“I think the problem is lorries going through the village because the villagers have respect for the speed limit.
“I have lobbied the county council and will organise meetings with them to try and get traffic diverted.”
One of Mr Graham’s ideas involved setting up a junction from the M6 at Hadrian’s Camp to Linstock, but this was met with objections from Brampton Road residents.

Hi just a question how much have these cost? and how much will it cost to maintain them? each year.Do the proceeds come back to the County Council ? Carlisle already has a problem with maintaining a fleet of portable Anti Social Behaviour CCTV cameras that are deployed around the different wards to tackle ASB, issues around funding, deployment,lampost inspection costs (for putting cameras on ) and maintainence.To me personally it seems excessive.

I think that anything that can 'calm' traffic down and slow it down - especially where people live has to be a good thing. 20's
plenty where people live.
