Parts of Cumbria among slowest in UK for broadband speeds

Carlisle – and Cumbria – have the third lowest broadband speeds for areas in the UK, according to a survey by uSwitch.
The price comparison site said the average download speed in the CA1 to CA6 postcode area was 3.24 Mbps – around 50 per cent slower than the national average.
St Bees was the slowest in Cumbria, together with Askham-in-Furness, at around 1.38 Mbps.
Julia Stent, director of Telecoms at uSwitch.com, said: “What’s really surprising is the number of cities and towns such as Hereford (the slowest) and Carlisle that are suffering from slow broadband speeds, dispelling the view that it’s just rural areas and small towns that have issues with their broadband.”
USwitch said the figures brought into ‘sharp focus’ the challenge the Government faced to fulfill a pledge that everyone in the UK would have access to superfast broadband by 2015.

I live at st bees and have had sky broadband for 2 yrs,my maximum speed varies from 0.15kb to 0.50kb it knocks itself off every hour unless you wait until after 1.00am in the morning,i have had the line checked it is ok,sky is misselling this product i was told i could get 2.0mb when i got it.

This is old news. Cumbria has always lagged behind in internet speeds, and always will whilst BT and providers continue to be greedy with money instead of investing on updating the telephone system to fibre optic. At the rate of this update, it may take in excess of 10 year for Cumbria to be brought up to speed - Carlisle will see this first.
