New managers to help run north Cumbria's hospitals

More new managers are being brought in from the north east to help run north Cumbria’s hospitals.
It has been announced that current interim chief executive Neil Goodwin will stand down next month ahead of the trust’s takeover by Northumbria Healthcare.
He will be replaced by Northumbria’s chief operating officer Ann Farrar, who will run Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary and the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven until the takeover deal goes through in December.
It has emerged she will be joined by Northumbrian colleague Dr Jeremy Rushmer, who will become director of clinical service transformation at the Carlisle and Whitehaven hospitals.
Jim Mackey, Northumbria chief executive, made the announcement in a memo to staff in the north east.
He added that one of his general managers and operational services managers will also join them at a later date.
North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust says this transfer is a gradual process to help prepare for takeover.
However, a nursing union has expressed concern as to why new managers are now being brought in, without any of the cash-strapped trust’s current team leaving.
This includes Dr Goodwin – currently earning £1,750 a day as interim chief – who will be kept on in an advisory role.
Although she welcomed new leadership, Estephanie Dunn, operations manager at the Royal College of Nursing’s regional office, said: “We are concerned to see that, given the scale of the financial challenges facing North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, a number of senior staff appear to be staying in their posts.”
The trust said that Dr Goodwin will be advising externally on takeover matters, as and when he is needed, and paid accordingly. Due to competition rules, this acquisition process must remain independent of Northumbria.
But Ms Dunn added that with the trust needing to save £16.9m this year alone, this decision is a concern.
“This will not help realise the financial savings that the trust desperately needs to make. There must also be more cost-efficient ways of managing perceived conflicts of interest,” she added.
Workington MP Tony Cunningham has already called on the health secretary to explain the decision to keep Dr Goodwin on – and reveal how much he will be paid for his work.
Unison representatives have raised similar concerns.
The north Cumbrian trust is being taken over due to long-running financial problems.
The deal is due to go through in December but due to growing patient safety concerns, there has been increasing pressure to allow new management from the north east to step in earlier.

Totally agree with John, but I would get rid of more than "some" of them *(management that is). I think "most" of them would be a better deal then the trust might start making some huge savings. Has nobody got it yet? Â£1750 a day - stop whinging on about being in debt if you can afford these obscene pay days - some of us may think you are crying wolf?
More managers. Get a grip. In your emails to staff you are asking about ways to save money. My proposal would be start reading the emails sent to you and get rid of some of your over paid under worked managers so the real workers can get on with what they do best.
