Roads reopen as new flood warning issued for Cumbria

A flood warning is in place for Cumbria with more bad weather expected - but many local roads are now open again.

A yellow warning of rain has been issued, the second highest warning level, throughout the day on Wednesday.

The Met Office says another spell of wet weather is expected to move northeastwards across Northern Ireland during Wednesday morning and across Scotland during the afternoon and evening.

The rain will become persistent and heavy for a time before clearing away from Scotland on Wednesday night.

Between 10mm and 15mm is expected to fall quite widely, with 20mm or more in places.

Forecasters warn that with further heavy rain falling on already saturated ground, people should be aware of the potential for localised flooding.

Many of the roads closed yesterday because of flooding have now re-opened, including:

  • Market Place, Whitehaven
  • School Brow, Moresby Parks, Whitehaven
  • Coach Road, Whitehaven
  • Elbra Farm Close, Maryport
  • A591 Thirlmere, Nr Keswick
  • Road between Great Broughton and Broughton Moor
  • A5086 is also now clear

Trumpet Road in Cleator, the road between St Bees and Egremont, and the B5345 in St Bees are passable with care.

A flood warning for Keswick Campsite remains in place today.

Motorists are still advised to take care when travelling in the county today. Rain fall in areas continues to cause excess surface water.

Police advise reducing speed and taking care when out and about.
