More than 3,000 new places at the dentist in Cumbrian town

More than 3,000 extra NHS dentist places will be on offer after a practice hired a Spanish dentist and plans to run three surgeries.

The Harbourside Dental Surgery in Maryport, part of the Oasis Group, hopes to run the three surgeries in its Irish Street building by the start of next month. The practice also has a dental therapist who has her own clinic.

A company spokeswoman said it was hoped that 3,000 patients would have access to an NHS dentist at the Maryport practice to reduce waiting lists. Patients on the group’s database will contacted in a “staggered manner” over the next year, a company spokeswoman said.

Children who have never had access to NHS dentistry will be offered places first.

Those registered who have not had an NHS dentist for a long time will also be given priority, the spokeswoman added.

She said the exact number of new patients in Maryport would depend on the nature of treatment which newly registered patients would require.

It was recently announced that primary care trust NHS Cumbria was awarded an extra £1.5m to help children and adults who had not seen a dentist in the last two years to get access to oral health advice and treatment.

The extra funding was awarded following a successful bid to the Department of Health.

NHS Cumbria has invested in seven new NHS dental practices and over 60,000 new NHS dental places in the county.

Have your say

Dentist have always been treated with a great deal of respect and admiration because of there ability to take away the dreadful toothache pain that can give us a good nights sleep, but they prefer us now to suffer because they are outside the NHS so they can extract as much cash as they can for pure greed they should feel ashamed.

Database is useless registered and nothing but found out places in Hexham and seen in a week. Keswick had and might still have places but children only.
