But they have still urged Allan Atkinson to contact them or his family to let them know he is safe and well.

The last sighting of the 60-year-old, from Etterby, had been on the city's Cumwhinton Road at 1pm on Tuesday.

However, police have been told that later in the day he was seen walking towards London Road, in the vicinity of the shopping area.

Police have released a new picture of Mr Atkinson and have urged hotels across Cumbria to check it against their guests.

"His wife and brother are growing increasingly concerned about his welfare and are hoping that he will make contact to ensure her, his family and friends that he is safe and well," said a police spokeswoman.

Mr Atkinson is described as 5ft 10in tall, with short, light brown hair. He is of medium build with a ruddy complexion.

When he was last seen he was wearing blue jeans and a grey jacket with a hood.

Anyone who knows where he is or has seen anyone matching his description should call police on 101 and speak to the duty Sergeant at Carlisle.
