Man headbutted best friend, hurled racist abuse at policeman

A man who attacked one of his best friends after accusing him of sleeping with his girlfriend has been given a suspended prison sentence at Carlisle Crown Court.

Karl Ingleton, 28, headbutted Malcolm Woodburn six times after waking him up from a drunken sleep after a drinking session at his home.

Mr Woodburn was left with two cuts to his face and a lasting fear of what other people might do to him in future, the court heard.

Ingleton, who has no fixed address, pleaded guilty to charges of causing Mr Woodburn actual bodily harm, and racially aggravated common assault by struggling and shouting racist insults at the policeman who arrested him in Carlisle on May 13 last year.

He was handed a 44-week prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to do 150 hours unpaid community work.

He was also put under probation supervision for a year and ordered to undergo alcohol rehabilitation.

Prosecuting counsel Jonathan Dickinson told the court Ingleton had been drinking with Mr Woodburn and two female friends in May last year when Mr Woodburn fell asleep.

Mr Woodburn, who is in his early 40s, woke up to find Ingleton standing over him with his hands around his throat.

His friend then head-butted him several times, accusing him of having sex with his girlfriend, Mr Dickinson said.

When PC Christopher Pereira tried to arrest him, Ingleton tried to head-butt him too and shouted racist insults at him.

How far would you go to look at a bird?

Very far. Excited when rare birds set up home here

I watch birds through the window and on TV. That's all

Birdwatching doesn't appeal to me. I'd go a long way to avoid a gull though
