Man arrested after attempted armed robbery in Carlisle

A man has been arrested following an attempted armed robbery in Cumbria.

Police were called to One Stop in Newtown Road, Carlisle, at 9.42am today after a masked man entered the store and threatened staff with a hammer.

However he made off empty-handed.

Officers, including a dog handler, were scrambled to the scene in a bid to trace the suspect.

Shortly after, a 37-year-old man from Carlisle was arrested on suspicion of attempted armed robbery.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 101.
