The first snowfall of winter has been recorded in Cumbria.

The dusting was recorded atop Great Dun Fell on Tuesday - making it the first place in England to experience snow in winter 2016.

While there is barely enough to form a decent snowball - let alone a snowman - for many it marks the beginning of the cold spell.

A spokeswoman for the Met Office said it is not too uncommon to see snow on mountain tops or higher ground during October.

However, the forecaster warned that it may be some time before we expect to see the white stuff on lower levels.

"The high pressure front we are currently experiencing has been keeping the weather fronts from the west away from the English coast," the spokeswoman said.

For the next week, temperatures in Cumbria are expected to remain in the low teens during the day and to drop to single figures overnight.
