A hospital ward closed to visitors following a flu outbreak will reopen tomorrow.

Bosses decided to impose the visiting ban at Ward 4 of the West Cumberland Hospital on Thursday, initially for 48 hours.

It followed an outbreak of influenza, commonly known as flu, at the Whitehaven hospital.

The suspension was reviewed on Saturday, but remained in place.

The North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust has now confirmed Ward 4 will reopen to visitors at 7pm on Tuesday.

Exceptions to the ban have been be allowed in special circumstances, but only with prior approval of the ward matron. Anyone who was allowed in had to wear a personal protective equipment kit.

Influenza can be highly infectious and spread rapidly in closed environments such as hospitals, schools and care homes.

The trust is continuing to urge anyone who is ill to stay away from both the West Cumberland Hospital and Cumberland Infirmary.

A similar visiting ban was imposed across the majority of the Carlisle hospital a few weeks ago following an outbreak of Norovirus - the winter sickness bug. Despite requests, visitors were continuing to go on to wards while displaying symptoms, causing it to spread.
