A North Cumbrian village could lose its pub – because permission to convert it into new homes is being recommended for approval.

Planners will today make a decision on whether or not to allow to The Sportsman Inn at Laversdale, near Carlisle Airport, to be transformed into two houses.

Despite 23 objections against the proposal, a council officer’s report concludes: “In overall terms, the proposal is considered to be compliant under the provisions of the national planning policy framework and the objectives of the relevant local plan and emerging local plan policies.

“Accordingly, the application is recommended for approval subject to the imposition of relevant conditions.”

The Sportsman Inn has been closed for two years.

Cameron Breweries, the former owners, cancelled the premises’ licence in April this year.

Stephen Komolafe wants to turn the pub into a three-bedroom house and a two- bedroom house.

Objectors, who don’t want to lose the pub, said there is interest in running it as a going concern.

Agents BW Architecture said the pub was not a financial success and it was put up for sale as a going concern.

The report states that it was first offered for sale in September 2013 and again in March 2014 as a going concern.

It also highlights the Government’s ongoing support for pubs and how in March the Department of Communities and Local Government announced the joint funding of a major new support and finance programme.
