A van driver has denied causing serious injuries through dangerous driving.
Jerry Bouma, 44, of Oudewater, Holland, appeared before magistrates in Carlisle this morning charged with the dangerous driving offence, which relates to a crash on the A66 yesterday.
He did not enter a plea to a separate charge of drink-driving.
Bouma was remanded in custody prior to his next appearance before the city's crown court next month.
One of the casualties of the three-vehicle crash, near Whinfell, is fighting for his life, police confirmed today.
The 67-year-old is said to be critically ill in hospital following the collision, which also left a woman in a serious condition.
The man and woman, who is also 67, were taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.
The pair, from the South Shields area, were in a black Nissan Qashqai car.
Bouma was driving a Renault Master van and was uninjured.
The third vehicle involved was a red Renault Scenic. No one from that car was injured.
