A paraglider was airlifted to hospital after he crash-landed at the edge of a Lake District fell.

He suffered multiple injuries after falling about 40ft down a crag and into the gill at Gategill.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team were called out at about 10.40am today to help the Great North Air Ambulance Crew in the rescue lasting more than two hours.

A Keswick MRT spokesman said: "After assessing the situation, it was decided that it would be safer for all concerned to request the assistance of the Coastguard helicopter to winch the casualty from the difficult location.

"While waiting for the S-92 from Prestwick, team members assisted the air ambulance crew to splint the casualty, and then place him in a Tyromont winching bag."

Once the man was winched to safety he was assessed before being flown to Newcastle Royal Victoria Infirmary.

He is said to have suffered multiple serious injuries to his back, leg, pelvis and arm.

He was in a stable condition on arrival.

The rescue involved 11 volunteers from Keswick MRT.
