Two neighbours have appeared in the dock over a car crash which left one of them seriously hurt.
Carlisle Crown Court heard William Craig, 34, and 26-year-old Marc Bainbridge were "good friends" at the time of the smash at Warwick Bridge.
Provisional licence holder Bainbridge got behind the wheel of a Peugeot that Craig had taken without permission. But he lost control on a bend, smashing the vehicle through a fence into a tree.
Craig suffered multiple injuries, including a serious spine problem, and later underwent surgery. He is now said to walk with a stoop.
Bainbridge admitted a charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, while Craig pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking.
The pair were sentenced today by Judge Tony Lancaster.
Bainbridge, of Greta Avenue, Carlisle, was given a suspended 12-month jail term. He must complete a rehabilitation requirement, a three-month night-time curfew and a driving ban.
Craig, also of Greta Avenue, was spared the prison sentence but received the same community order.
