Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team rescued a man and a woman who became stranded on high ground above Buttermere.

The rescue operation – triggered by a call for help shortly before 4pm yesterday – came at a busy time for the team, which has been called out six times in as many days.

Yesterday, the pair rescued by the 16-strong team were a 69-year-old man and his 58-year-old woman companion, as well as their two dogs.

They were all “cragfast” on steep ground above Warnscale Bothy in Buttermere, said a spokesman for the mountain tescue team.

Later on the same night, at around 9.30pm, the team helped Wasdale Mountain rescue team to search for a missing walker – a 32-year-old man who was a two day walk around the Wasdale and Ennerdale fells.

He was found at Black Sail Youth Hostel in Ennerdale at 11.20pm Another operation involved 22 team members, including swift-water rescue technicians, who worked with police, fire service staff and the Coastguard

Rescue Helipcopter in a search of the River Derwent late on Monday night after a report of a female having jumped from Gote Bridge in Cockermouth.
