A drunken Carlisle man who doused himself in petrol as police looked on has been spared immediate prison.
Gary Pearson, 51, poured fuel around his Botcherby Avenue home and grabbed a lighter during a dramatic incident which unfolded on July 17.
Tragedy was only averted when officers stormed the house and restrained Pearson, who had binged on beer and vodka. He later confessed he panicked and intended to take his own life.
Carlisle Crown Court heard neighbouring families were evacuated by firefighters called to clean up the scene.
Pearson was sentenced today having pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted arson.
He was given a 20-month prison sentence which was suspended for two years. He must complete 150 hours' unpaid work and a rehabilitation requirement.
Judge Peter Hughes QC said the punishment was the best way to help Pearson and protect the community.
