A man has been airlifted to hospital after falling from a viaduct in north Cumbria this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene, at the viaduct in Wetheral, at around 3.15pm.

Firefighters from Carlisle's east and west stations were joined by a crew from Penrith and the Great North Air Ambulance.

Initial reports were that the man was in the River Eden.

However Bob Carruthers, crew manager at Carlisle East, said: "He wasn't actually in the water. He'd fallen from the viaduct - about 20 feet or so.

"The air ambulance also attended and he was airlifted to the RVI in Newcastle. It looks like he has broken some bones in his spine."

A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance said that the man is currently in a stable condition.
