A MAN has been airlifted to hospital in Newcastle after falling from his bicycle near Carlisle.

The Pride of Cumbria flew the man, in his 30s, to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service called for air support to help the man when it was suspected he was suffering from potentially serious abdominal injuries.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service was scrambled to the scene at 2.10pm.

The flight to the Newcastle hospital took 27 minutes.

The man was reported to be in a stable condition when he arrived.

No further details have been released.

* The Pride of Cumbria helicopter and trauma team were also called to the scene of a crash on the A68 near Corbridge at around 4.30pm.

Two adults and two children were lucky to escape when their car left the road at Stagshaw shortly.

They were all treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in road ambulances.
