Concerns have been raised about the impact the loss of free dog poo bags on the environment.

Allerdale council has announced it will no longer provide free bags once current stocks run out.

It had spend more than £12,500 a year providing the bags to dog owners from its offices across the borough.

Councillor Bill Finlay told a full council meeting yesterday: "I am concerned about the potential impact."

He called on Coun Mike Heaslip, the executive member responsible for environmental issues, to monitor dog fouling to see if instances increased once the free bags were scrapped.

Coun Heaslip confirmed the situation would be assessed.

He said: "It is something that we will continue to monitor to see if there are any significant changes."

The meeting heard that rolls of dog poo bags were available for £1 in supermarkets and pound shops across the town.
