COUNCILLORS in Longtown are looking for a water leak - after they were hit with a bill for almost £2,000 for the last quarter.

United Utilities told Arthuret Parish Council the figure - four times the normal amount for a quarter - is what it would expect a farm to use in a year.

The water supplier is due to investigate the issue at the changing rooms on the site of the old Lochinvar School, which are used by two football teams.

Councillors are confident there will be a satisfactory explanation for the bill of £1,958.22.

"It is a huge amount that we haven't budgeted for," said the clerk, Karen Johnston, when she updated councillors at their latest meeting.

"Hopefully we are going to get a rebate but we don't know. We have got to try and get it sorted."
