Indecent images of children as young as two were among dozens of "appalling and loathsome" photos.
The images were discovered on a memory card and mobile phone seized from Shaun Klitzke.
Police became involved after his estranged wife contacted them. Carlisle Crown Court heard he had scores of indecent still and moving images - 68 of which were classed as category A, the most serious.
Klitzke, 34, formerly of Aspatria but now living in Queens Terrace, Jesmond, admitted six charges of making indecent photographs of children.
His offences were committed over the course of several weeks last year.
Judge Peter Davies jailed him for 16-months and made him the subject of a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
