Police have warned they will pursue those who illegally or unlawfully own guns or ammunitions after a man was jailed for five years.

They have highlighted the lethal consequences of guns in the wrong hands after seizing a collection of unlawful ammunition.

Stephen Williamson, 42, was found with the working parts of a military rifle and more than 200 rounds of ammunition.

He was jailed for five years at Carlisle Crown Court last week after he was found guilty of possession of ammunition without a certificate, possession of prohibited ammunition and possession of a firearm without a certificate.

The items were discovered when police conducted a warrant at his home, in Station Road, Penrith, in June last year.

It's a case that officers hope will highlight the dangers - and penalties - of holding illegal or unlawful firearms.

Detective Constable Richard Massey said: “To own a firearms licence is a privilege and one which comes with great responsibility.

"This prosecution shows that Cumbria Constabulary will bring those who illegally hold firearms or ammunition to justice."

Anyone who owns a gun must have a licence for it.

DC Massey added: "The licencing is there to protect members of the public from the tragic consequences or misuse of firearms.

"There simply is no excuse for holding firearms without the correct accreditation."

He added that the force would always investigate any reports of firearms offences.
