Homeless people will get support from a Whitehaven charity set up in memory of a campaigning teenager.

Sarah's Star Fund has sponsored a room at Egremont's homeless hostel Calderwood House. The charity was set up by the family of Sarah McKain, who died aged 19 in 2013.

She had a rare heart defect and was committed to helping others with similar conditions, as well as fundraising for a variety of causes.

"We are delighted to announce that Sarah's Star Fund has sponsored a room at our homeless hostel," said the hostel's manager Rachel Holliday.

"Our sponsors are essential to our residents. They offer hope and comfort that people out there still care. They care enough to provide a warm comfortable room to someone who has fallen on hard times."

Calderwood House, which was opened in September 2015, exists to tackle issues around homelessness in west Cumbria by offering shelter and providing employment opportunities.

The female resident who will soon move into the sponsored room will write a thank you letter to the charity, explaining her story and hopes for the future.

"We would like to thank everyone who has supported us and continues to," said Sarah's sister, Hannah McKain.

"We would not be able to help people or organisations like Calderwood House without your support. We are proud and honoured to help such a worthwhile cause."

And Mrs Holliday said: "I was really moved to hear Sarah's story. Sarah was an inspirational young lady who has been taken from her family far too soon.

"I am so thankful that Sarah's family has chosen Calderwood House to support. Although Sarah is no longer with us, she is still helping every person who stays in that room to get back on their feet."

The homeless hostel recently received a £3,600 donation at a charity event, including £1,000 from Sarah's Star Fund.

Organised by Lesley Thompson, following a visit to the Egremont hostel with her husband John, it attracted nearly 200 guests.

Lesley said: "I was overwhelmed by the kindness of Mayson Brothers who sponsored the £50 note, won by Rebecca Neen, who kindly donated it to the charity."

Artists included Avalon, Amy Morton, Dougie Congdon, Darcey & Jack and Julie-Ann Kelly who all performed for free. Prizes and donations were given by the local community and £1,000 was donated anonymously.
