Plans to convert a former sheltered housing scheme into new self-contained flats have been lodged.

Riverside Cumbria wants to convert Barras House, in Dalston, into 14 flats.

The social landlord is asking for permission to remodel the building, which once provided 19 self-contained shelter housing flats with communal areas.

Due to a lack of demand in the area it wants to convert the building into 10 one-bedroom flats and four two-bed flats.

Documents supporting the application state: "The proposals set out in the application represent an opportunity for the refurbishment of a void property to improve the appearance and the existing layout to create 14 flats, therefore improving the living standards of the future residents.

"The proposals are to prepare the property to be used and enjoyed in the future while retaining the external character of the building and the surrounding area."

External works would include removal of all external stores, the demolition of a single storey offshoot to the back of the building and the creation of eight new parking spaces.

Window replacements and external alterations to provide new entrances are also in the plans. Windows openings at the front of the building will be increased in size to make way for Juliet balconies and French doors.
