Massive flames and smoke filled the sky as fire crews battled a blaze at a barn.

Eye witnesses reported smoke billowing out of the building near the A69, north of Brampton.

Blazing flames tore through the outbuilding of a farm, destroying its roof.

Firefighters were called at about 6.30pm yesterday to a barn fire near Low Row.

Eyewitnesses told the News & Star they saw "black smoke coming from the flames" as they drove nearby.

The fire started in what firefighters suspect was a boiler room adjacent to a farmhouse.

Firefighters from retained stations in Brampton and Haltwhistle were first to the scene.

They extinguished the fire using three hose reels.

Carlisle east station firefighters were also called out.

A spokesman from the station said: "It was a detached boiler house with a wood burning stove type boiler which cause [the fire].

"We're not sure what went wrong with it."
