Firefighters used one hose reel jet to tackle a fire at a flat in Whitehaven this evening.
They were called to the address, on Wellington Row, shortly before 7pm.
It was reported that a tealight had set fire to some curtains.
A female occupant had left the property by the time firefighters arrived at the scene.
A spokesman said that a man in his 30s tackled the fire using a dry powder extinguisher.
The crew also wore breathing apparatus and used one hose reel jet to put the fire out, before checking the scene with a thermal imaging camera.
The man was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital after he inhaled some smoke and dry powder.
The crew left at 7.40pm.
