A supermarket worker who gave his pals a lift after drinking at a 21st birthday party in Carlisle has been given a 20-month ban.

Jason Bell, 21, was caught after witnesses saw his Ford Mondeo being driven erratically in Dalston Road at 3.15am on August 14, Carlisle's Magistrates' Court heard.

At one point, the car mounted the pavement.

The defendant, of Richardson Street, Denton Holme, admitted drink-driving. At the time of his offence Bell was more than twice the legal limit.

Though he initially denied driving, Bell later admitted the offence, saying he drank a bottle of Budweiser followed by three or four pints of lager at the Walkabout bar in Botchergate. He then drove home.

The defendant told the court: "I'm sorry but I'm getting help for my drinking."

Magistrates also imposed a £253 fine and associated costs of £115.
