Dogs from across the UK were put through their paces in a competition to support two poorly youngsters.

The biannual West Coast Terrier, Lurcher and Whippet Club show took place at Flimby Rugby Club to support two little boys battling serious illnesses.

The event, on Sunday, included racing, the Best in the West show and the open show and featured entrants from Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Children as young as four entered.

The competition, which has been taking place for more than 27 years, regularly raises money for good causes.

This year, organisers decided to support the families of three-year-old Aaron Storey, of Currock, Carlisle, who suffers from a blood condition called aplastic anaemia, and 21-month-old Jack Gibson, of Flimby, who has leukaemia.

They decided to support the families after members from Carlisle and west Cumbria told them about the boys.

A raffle, a tombola and donations from people and businesses raised £850 which will be split between the two families.

Jennifer Wilson, of the West Coast Terrier, Lurcher and Whippet Club who organise the event, said: "It went really well. It was well-attended and people were generous.

"We're very pleased to be able to support the boys and we're letting them know that there are people who are thinking about them.

"We couldn't have done it without members of the club and the generosity of people who donated.

"The entries were of a very high standard."

This year's open show winners have also qualified for next year's Best in the West competition which is due to take place in May 2017.
