A well-known Whitehaven man has suffered a heart attack while holidaying in the United States.

Steve Gibbons, a former Copeland mayoral candidate, Labour activist and trade union official, fell ill while on a trip to Las Vegas last week.

A spokesperson for Mr Gibbons' family said: "Steve is currently receiving treatment in Las Vegas following a heart attack."

Mr Gibbons, who sat on Copeland Council from 1995 to 1999, was runner-up to Mike Starkie in the race to become Copeland's first elected mayor in 2015. A long-serving union official both locally and in the North East, Mr Gibbons has latterly been working for Unite.
