CUMBRIAN construction tycoon Fred Story has joined the Sunday Times Rich List. 

Mr Story, a former owner of Carlisle United whose family trust owns Story Homes and Story Contracting, is a new entry in the annual listing of the UK's 1,000 wealthiest residents.

He appears in joint 799th place with estimated wealth of £125m. 

As trailed beforehand, Philip Day, the Edinburgh Woollen Mill entrepreneur who has a home near Carlisle, climbs from joint 145th to to joint 110nd as his wealth jumped from £750m to £1.05bn making him the county's only resident billionaire.

Brian Scowcroft, who lives near Windermere and owns Kingmoor Park business park in Carlisle, and his sister Janet Lefton slip from 595th to joint 640th as their estimated wealth declined from £165m to £160m.

Other entries with Cumbrian connections include Lady Ballyedmond – widow of the late Lord Ballyedmond who bought Corby Castle near Carlisle in 1994 – who slips from joint 68th to joint 75th with £1.4bn.

And the owners of the Carlisle ready-meals firm Cavaghan & Gray, Ranjit Boparan and his wife Baljinder, climb from 608th to 267th as their wealth soared from £160m to £430m. Their 2 Sisters Food Group acquired Cavaghan & Gray in 2011.

The Rich List is topped by the Mumbai-born brothers David and Simon Reuben who came to Britain in the 1950s and are now worth £13.1bn.

They began as traders selling scrap metal but made their fortune trading aluminium.
