A family is celebrating the arrival of their fifth generation - for the second time in living memory.

When little Harley Shields was born six weeks ago in Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary he became the apple of his family's eye.

But the Carlisle youngster is slightly outnumbered, with the generations above him all being women.

Harley's mum Bethany Richardson is 20, gran Julie Richardson is 43 and there's more cause for celebration as great grandmother Ann Buchanan is 63 today (FRI) .

They all live within Carlisle, while great-great grandmother Margaret Blair, 86, lives in Calthwaite, near Penrith.

Margaret moved to Cumbria from Wishaw, in North Lanarkshire, 63 years ago. She has lived in the same house all that time.

Gathered together in Julie's home in Housteads Road, Sandsfield Park, she told The Cumberland News : "We are such a close family, this is on my mam's side and we get together all the time.

"The next big get together is Christmas. We're a big family because my granny had seven children.

"My granny think it's all wonderful, she's absolutely over the moon."

But having five generations in the family isn't something completely new for this group.

"It happened back in 1995 when I had my first son Leighton, there were five generations then.

"On top of us all then, was was my great grandma Agnes O'Hara," Julie added.

Immediately after welcoming Harley into the world, Julie threw a small party for immediate family members.

Now Bethany and the rest of the family are busy preparing for Harley's christening which will be in the New Year.
