Detectives have moved to reassure the public after reports of an 11-year-old child being approached by two men in a car.
An investigation was launched by officers operating in Wigton but found the incident was not as initially reported.
The child was said to have been approached on Good Friday about 7.30pm.
Two local men were arrested but have since been released with no further action.
Detective Constable Matthews from West Cumbria CID said: "There has been discussion about this report on social media, and I would like to reassure the public that there was no risk to any children.
“However, I urge anyone who does see anything suspicious to report it so that it can be investigated.
"Keeping children safe is one of our top priorities, and we will investigate any reports of suspicious activity thoroughly."
