Four people, including a four-year-old child, were injured in a three car crash on one of Cumbria's busiest routes.

The collision occurred on the A66, near Newbiggin, Penrith, at about 9pm last night.

The collision involved a dark blue Audi S3, a silver Audi TT and a silver Volvo C30.

Two ambulances and two Penrith-based doctors from the Beep Fund Doctors, which sees local doctors provide emergency support to the ambulance service, were sent to the scene.

The driver of the Volvo, a 58-year-old woman, suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries. Her passenger, a four-year-old child, is believed to have minor injuries.

They were both taken to Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary.

A 19-year-old man, who was driving the Audi A3, was also taken to the city hospital with serious injuries.

The Audi TT driver, a 21-year-old man, did not need hospital treatment and is believed to have suffered minor injuries.

Dr Theo Weston, from the Beep fund, said: "Three casualties, including two adults and one child, were treated at the scene and taken to the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, by land ambulance.

"None of them had life-threatening injuries."

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Police said: "Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision or who may have witnessed the vehicles being driven prior to the collision."
