A cyclist from Carlisle seriously injured in a crash in the city has been transferred to a Newcastle hospital.

The 36-year-old man is in a serious condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary after his bicycle was in a collision with a car in Denton Holme yesterday morning.

He was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary but later transferred to the north east.

The crash happened at the double mini roundabout beside St James Church.

The driver of the purple Ford Fiesta involved, a 56-year-old woman from Carlisle, was shocked but was uninjured.

Police closed Norfolk Street and St James Road for around four hours while emergency services dealt with the incident.

Witnesses can call 101 and speak to PC Amos, quoting log 43 of May 31.
