Joe Calzaghe is heading to Cumbria for a special evening.

The evening with the Welshman will take place at Whitehaven Golf Club on Thursday, September 15, with comedian Greg Cook and MC John Lebbon also on the bill.

Lebbon, a sports presenter on That’s Manchester TV and a former rugby league player with both Whitehaven and Workington and now a stand-up comedian, gave an update on how preparations for the night have been going.

“The tickets did not really sell during the summer but they are starting to pick up now,” said Lebbon.

“You do not need to buy a table. You can buy an individual ticket if you don’t want to buy a whole table. There are a couple of VIP passes still available but I think most of them have gone.

“We will also be having an auction. A lot of people like the memorabilia and that sort of thing. We are hoping to have some pictures of Joe during the years that we can try to sell and we can get him to sign them and stuff like that.

“We are still six or seven weeks away from the event, so I am not panicking just yet in terms of ticket sales.”

Lebbon added sponsorship opportunities are available for the night.

Calzaghe first shot to national fame in 1997 when he beat two-time World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion Chris Eubank in Sheffield to win the vacant WBO super-middleweight championship.

He was recognised for his six years as a world super-middleweight champion in 2003 after receiving an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List and received a CBE in 2008. He went on to win the International Boxing Federation (IBF) title in 2006 and fought Mikkel Kessler in a unification bout for four super-middleweight titles a year later, again emerging victorious by a unanimous decision.

The Welshman was nominated as BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2007 – the first boxer since Lennox Lewis in 1999 to win the trophy – and has now also been inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

The 44-year-old retired from the sport in February 2009 as the reigning world champion, with an undefeated record of 46-0.

Following his retirement from boxing, Calzaghe started his own boxing promotion company called Calzaghe Promotions with his father, Enzo Calzaghe, and he featured in the seventh series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2009. He partnered Russian professional Kristina Rihanoff who he began a relationship with, before the couple split in 2013 and that could prove a topic of conversation on the night.

Meanwhile, Cook and Lebbon will be performing along with Calzaghe.

The event will begin at 7.30pm at Whitehaven Golf Club. There will be a photo opportunity with Calzaghe as well as the sports collectors auction on the night.
