A businessman who flouted a driving ban and drove more than 30 miles after drinking a bottle of red wine has been jailed for 190 days.

Ryan Hyslop, 38, who was given a four year driving ban in January, was caught after he crashed his Peugeot car into a hedge on Cumwhinton Road, Carlisle, on June 2.

He had consumed more than twice the legal limit of alcohol.

At the city's magistrates court, Hyslop, of Pennine View Close, Harraby, who has family in Whitehaven, admitted driving while disqualified and drink driving.

His defence lawyer Craig Smith said Hyslop, who has a history of anxiety and depression, was not thinking clearly.

He had been at the car body repair business he runs in Dumfries on the day in question but decided he had had enough. So he drove home to Carlisle along the M6 motorway.

In addition to jailing him, District Judge Gerald Chalk imposed a 63 month driving ban and a year's Probation Service supervision.
