A BED shop has reopened in Carlisle creating new jobs three years after being torched by arsonists.

Harveys was reduced to rubble after an arson attack in November 2013. The flames were so intense in the store on Crown Street, off Botchergate, that the temperature inside was estimated to have reached between 600C and 700C.

The roof of the building collapsed and stock and electronic equipment were destroyed. Other areas of the shop were damaged by the water used to extinguish the flames.

The fire was finally put out by 30 firefighters and six fire engines.

Following a complete refurbishment, Bensons for Beds has now reopened creating four jobs for members of staff. Both Bensons for Beds and furniture shop Harveys are within The Steinhoff Group.

Neil Sears, regional manager of Bensons for Beds, said the brand was thrilled to reopen after investing significant time and resources into the store.

He said: "We are committed to the local community and have therefore made a substantial investment in ensuring that the store could return to business as usual. We are looking forward to greeting new staff and welcoming back our loyal customers.”
