A man remains in a serious condition following an assault in Carlisle.

An investigation is underway after police were called to Petteril Bank Road in Harraby.

A man, 39, was taken to Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary where he received treatment for a head injury.

He was then transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

A 31-year-old man from Carlisle was arrested and questioned by police.

He has now been bailed until December 17.

Police later issued details of the condition of the injured man.

Officers were called to Petteril Bank Road just before 10pm on Tuesday.

A police spokesman said the man was in a serious but stable condition.

Nearby residents said that officers were in the area on Wednesday morning questioning people and collecting CCTV recordings.

Officers are also keen to speak to two men who helped the injured man to his feet following the assault.
