Plans for an 80-bedroom Premier Inn in Cockermouth have been given the go-ahead.
Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants wants to replace the current Shepherd's Hotel with the development.
It is expected to create 51 jobs.
Allerdale council's development panel unanimously approved the plans today.
The footpath leading to the hotel must be improved and better drainage is also needed under conditions attached to the plans.
There will be a separate planning application later for signage.
