Young spirit-hunters fought the fear at Carlisle Castle when they risked coming face to face with notorious ghosts.

Guides dressed in black led the way up twisting stone steps and through freezing corridors to the deepest, darkest cellars in the castle.

The popular tours held in half-term week focus on scary tales including the story of an 18th-century soldier who died of fear when he saw a ghostly figure come out of the darkness towards him.

Children heard about the shape-shifting ghost who takes over the thoughts of whoever sees him and the white figure who appears to only the most sensitive of souls.

Fans of the supernatural and believers in the spiritual world joined youngsters on the tour. Les Nawosad and wife Margaret from London Road, Carlisle, brought their 16-year-old daughter Jessikah and her friend Marta Moreira along.

Margaret said: “We watch television programmes where they present evidence of the paranormal and I’m so interested. I think I saw a ghost in Upperby Cemetery when I was a teenager.

“To hear about the history of our city on a tour like this is great.”

Ruth Eltringham from Durham brought her grandsons Harry and Ryan Morrisey and Ashton Eltringham along on Monday. The family are staying at their caravan in Port Carlisle.

Mrs Eltringham said: “The kids are really interested, I just hope they don’t have nightmares.”

Ashton insists he’s not scared of ghosts. The seven-year-old said: “The ghost tour is good but it’s not scary.

“I love dressing up in my favourite Halloween outfit and scaring everyone.”
