Two men and two women were arrested for drugs and driving offences after a three-car crash ground traffic to a halt in Workington.

The smash happened on New Bridge Road at the Tesco roundabout at 4.44pm yesterday, prompting a section of the road to be closed for around two hours, creating long tailbacks.

It is understood that one vehicle hit the back of another, pushing it into the third.

Nobody was seriously hurt.

Police later made four arrests for suspected drugs, burglary and driving offences.

Officers say the smash involved a Nissan Almera driven by a man from Carlisle, a Toyota Yaris driven by a woman from Seaton and a BMW driven by a man from Workington.

The drivers of the Yaris and the BMW were taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven, along with a female passenger in the Almera.

None was detained overnight.

The driver of the Almera and a second female passenger fled the scene.

Police later stopped a Vauxhall Corsa in Whitehaven, seized a quantity of methadone and arrested two men and two women from Carlisle.

A man, aged 28, was apprehended on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop for police, possession of a controlled drug and burglary.

A woman, aged 22, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled drug and a 33-year-old man for the same offence and on suspicion of burglary.

A woman, aged 52, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled drug and for driving other than in accordance with her licence.

She has been released on police bail until August 29.

The others were still in custody being questioned by police this morning.
