Work to investigate what caused flooding on a half mile section of the A595 near Whitehaven begins next week.

The survey, by the Highways Agency, is to investigate the cause of flooding at Bigrigg, south of Whitehaven.

Officials will clean and check the drainage system, as well as looking at carriageway levels between Dalzell and North Road junctions.

The work begins on Monday and is expected to last until January 22.

Drivers are being advised that the work will be taking place during the day but will be confined to an off-peak period between 9.30am and 2.30pm each day.

The survey work will move along the route in phases and traffic will be managed by temporary traffic lights.

Highways Agency project sponsor Jonathan Reade said: “This is important work to identify the cause of occasional flooding along this section of the A595 and help us come up with a solution.

“We have timed the work to take place during an off-peak period during the day when traffic levels are low. We will be doing our best to ensure any inconvenience to drivers and residents is kept to a minimum."
