Five-a-side soccer tournament organised by police

A CHARITY five-a-side football tournament organised by Cumbria police raised more than £200 for the Great North Air Ambulance.

Two police teams were joined at Lakes College, Lillyhall, Workington, by another 13 teams from other emergency services, community groups, businesses and supermarkets.

The winners were Atkins Global who beat Derwent and Solway 3-1 in the final.

Their trophies were donated by Austinwren of Maryport. Refreshments were provided by the supermarkets taking part.

PCSO Sarah Brown, organiser, said: “I was pleased with the good turnout of players and spectators.

“It seemed to go really well apart from the weather, which flooded the pitches meaning we had to use the all-weather surface.

“Some teams have already expressed an interest in coming again next year so we are hoping to make it annual.”

The fundraising tournament was organised partly to encourage local agencies to work together and have fun.

Donations were taken during the event and there were collection buckets in Maryport Co-op for the week before the event.

Organisers thanked the supermarkets, Debenhams, Austinwren and the Lakes College for the use of its facilities.
