A teenager who lost control of his car and left one of his passengers in hospital for five weeks has been fined after he admitted driving without due care and attention.

Simon David Reside, 19, of Musgrave Street, Penrith, appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court.

The court was told that Reside was driving his Renault Clio in the early hours of October 4 last year when he failed to negotiate a right hand bend on the Clifton Dykes Road near Penrith.

Reside lost control of his car which flipped into the air, crossed to the opposite side of the road and crashed into a sandstone bridge, ending up on its roof.

Reside had two female passengers with him and both were seriously hurt. One was in hospital for five weeks and the other for five days.

They suffered several broken bones, with one needing a skin graft for injuries to her stomach.

The court was told that Reside has changed his life considerably and is deeply sorry for the injuries he caused.

He was fined £210 with prosecution costs of £85 and a £15 victim surcharge.

Eight points were placed on his driving licence.
