Fears for jobs at Cumbrian council

Staff at Allerdale Council face a “difficult and uncertain” time in the latest round of cuts.

The council says it is “too early” to say whether the restructuring will mean compulsory redundancies.

But the News & Star understands that “at risk” letters have been sent to council employees in several departments.

The council has also confirmed that it is in talks with union representatives to “limit the impact of job cuts”.

Harry Dyke, the council’s chief executive, said: “In 2012-13 the grant from central Government was reduced which meant the council had to find savings of £3.5m over a three-year period.

“With further reductions in the grant proposed for 2013-14, the situation requires careful management.

“We are in the second year of a transformation programme and have successfully found savings of nearly £1.5m to date. We are continuing to work to find the remaining savings as part of the overall programme.

“At Allerdale, we have been following a financial plan which means that we have bee tackling our financial challenges in a controlled and methodical manner. The savings to date have included a complete restructure of management, the re-negotiation of contracts and efficiency savings.

“We have officially started formal consultation with staff regarding other restructuring proposals which will help us to deliver these savings. When facing such large financial challenges, it is inevitable that reductions in council services will eventually occur. However, we are working hard to protect frontline services as much as possible and to date we have succeeded in doing this.

“At this stage it is too early to say if there will be a need to make further compulsory redundancies, but we have been in discussions with union representatives in order to limit the impact of job cuts.

“This is a difficult time for staff but we are aiming, during this period of uncertainty, to continue to provide the best possible services to the people of Allerdale.”
