A woman who climbed up scaffolding on a Carlisle housing estate has appeared in court.

Sandra Beattie, 47, from Vasey Crescent in the Warwick Road area of Carlisle, admitted causing a public nuisance in Harraby on November 8.

Carlisle magistrates heard how a workman on the roof behind the shops in Petteril Bank Road saw Beattie climbing a ladder onto the scaffolding.

Adrienne Harris, prosecuting, said the worker tried to stop her but couldn’t, so he helped her up onto the scaffolding and then onto a flat wooden platform for her own safety.

The man alerted police but when they arrived they couldn’t get her to come down of her own accord, so they called an ambulance and the fire service. Fire officers attempted to place a harness and rope to help her down but she became aggressive.

Eventually a turntable fire vehicle was brought in and Beattie was brought down safely.

Mrs Harris told the court that during police interview Beattie had said she went up the scaffolding to kill herself. She had alcohol problems and was drunk on the day of the incident.

Margaret Payne, defending, told the court that Beattie was extremely embarrassed about being in court.

The case was adjourned until November 27 for reports.
