Donkey starts new life after being rescued in Cumbria

A donkey is starting a new life with the Donkey Sanctuary after it was abandoned at Appleby Horse Fair.

Flash was found next to the flashing lane, where horses race up and down at high speed, at risk of injuring himself and other animals.

He was found to have overgrown hooves and suspected tumours and was treated on site by the Donkey Sanctuary’s vets before being taken into the sanctuary’s care.

Welfare adviser, Pam Moon, came across Flash running free, distressed, and abandoned after all the other traders had left. “I was sorry to see him in such a state and in such danger,” she said. “It could have ended really badly or he could have caused an accident if he’d run out in front of the horses. It’s sad he seems to have been abandoned – perhaps because of his health problems or perhaps because his owners failed to sell him. But we were glad we were there to help and to treat him and to get him away to safety.”

She said Flash, a four-year-old stallion, still has some medical problems but has “a sanctuary for life” with the charity.

“That’s why we were [at the fair],” she added. “We always maintain a presence to monitor animal welfare and to help in cases like Flash’s.”
