Workington’s MP says he is pleased that the Christmas saving scheme Farepak, which went into administration six years ago, has finally paid out.

Savers across the county were devastated when the hamper company collapsed in 2006, taking with it thousands of pounds worth of savings.

But after a long campaign to get compensation for those affected, with Workington MP Sir Tony Cunningham one of the main players, cash is finally coming to those who lost out.

Mr Cunningham said that although people were only being compensated by 35p for every pound they had saved, he was still pleased as at one point they were thought to be in line for just 1p in the pound.

“Some people are going to be getting £100 just before Christmas – so they’re delighted,” said Mr Cunningham.

“The collapse of Farepak was in the news for quite a bit but we had to keep it going and we did. I’m pleased that people are getting something back - although it’s not ideal.”
