A man has been jailed after admitting a string of thefts and criminal damage in a drunken crime spree.

Terence James Cannon, 28, of Brakeside Gardens, Whitehaven, pleaded guilty – or gave an indicated guilty plea – to nine charges when he appeared before West Cumbria magistrates.

The charges included damaging a Ford Transit van, a Ford Focus and a Ford Fiesta, damaging a dwelling and thefts of various items including perfume, clothing, alcohol, sweets, credit cards and car stereos and possessing cannabis.

Cannon also admitted breaching a community order made on February 7 after he stole a £3 air freshener. However, he denied an allegation that he damaged a Renault Clio and the case was discontinued.

The incidents all happened in the Whitehaven area on January 4.

Magistrates jailed Cannon for 120 days, after imposing various custodial sentences ranging from 70 days to 120 days, to be served concurrently. There was no separate sentence for the breach.

Magistrates said the severity of the offences left them no option but to jail him for his “disgraceful conduct”.

Bethany Julia Percival, 19, of Jefferson Park, Whitehaven, is understood to have been with Cannon throughout the one-day crime spree. She admitted one charge of damaging a Vauxhall car and one of stealing a stereo, alcohol and debit cards.

Percival also gave an indicated guilty plea to two further thefts of car stereos.

She has been released on bail prior to sentencing next week.
